What is the point of recording video?

I have the battery doorbell camera, the PTZ camera and the outdoor camera. If I want to record video I can press the video icon. But I have to stop recording if i want to do anything else in the app, or do something else on my phone. I expected to be able to set the camera to record while I carry on doing other things, but this function is worthless (unless I'm being stupid).

    Hi Chris,

This function is only intended to manually record images for a short period of time, this recording is then stored in your smartphone's storage. If you want to record images for a longer period or if you want to record as soon as movement is detected, you need to insert an SD card in the camera/video doorbell. Note that a battery-operated camera device can only automatically record images when motion is detected. An mains-powered camera device can also record continuously to the sd card.

  • Hi Brian,

Thank you. I can understand that it is not practical to have a battery-powered camera recording for a long time. However, I also have the mains powered doorbell on my desk (I don't have mains power near my door) and I have the same problem with that. I can only record while that doorbell is open on the app. Similarly I have the mains powered indoors PTZ camera and that has the same issue . Yes, they take photographs if there is movement or sound detected, but no video. I have a 256 GB SD card in all devices.

It really would be helpful if you provided full user manuals (for download) that give all these details. That would reduce the number of questions you have to answer.

  • Hi Chris,

I hereby send you a link to our FAQ in which the recording options are described: https://help.calex.eu/hc/en-gb/articles/9163870364573-How-to-store-recordings-from-the-Smart-Video-Doorbell-or-Camera

If this still does not help you, I advise you to submit a request via help.calex.eu using the option 'Submit a request' in the upper right corner of the screen. We need some more information about your smart devices, so we can take it from there.

    With kind regards,

  • Yes indeed. It's disappointing that Calex do not make this sort of detailed information easily available. I'm sure some people would abandon trying to use devices effectively as they struggle to find this information.

  • Hi Chris,

In fact, we have made this information easily available. At https://help.calex.eu you can also access our FAQs, manuals. Through our Youtube channel we also have several instructional videos available.
Also in the Calex Smart App from the screen 'Account' we refer to these pages.

Do you have any tips on how we could do this even better so that you can find the information you need even easier?

    With kind regards,

  • Hi Brian,

Sorry if I did not explore the web site closely enough. A quick change to the web pages would be to add links to those FAQs within the product descriptions. That's where I normally go to find documentation on products, and other web sites provide information that way. Later you could turn those FAQs into a series of PDFs which combine similar topics.
